About the Item

Although there are a few other places in the world where the semi-precious stone Onyx exist, we found our collection in Mexico. A bit of information on the semi-precious stone onyx. While it is often thought of as the black gemstone capable of transforming negative energy in positive energy, onyx is in fact a multicolor stone resulting from the metamorphism of limestone rich in Magnesium and Calcium, a process that takes thousands of years. During these years, climate change, natural disasters and wildlife have contributed to the various colors of each layer of sediments. In its primary stage, the rock does not reveal its beauty. However, once it is cut, carved, shaped and polished, the outcome is breathtaking. There is simply no designer like Mother Earth herself. We have been very grateful to visit two workshops where the stones are sliced, cut, carved, or otherwise shaped into their final forms. Watching these artisans covered in thick layers of dust, handling these blocks of stone was truly fascinating. A word about the onyx candle holders There are two types of candle holders: Those with recessed votives and those with regular flush votives. - Candle holders with recessed votives have a lot in common with the onyx lamps. The idea being that the light comes from within and glows through the stone. Therefore, the flame must start below the top of the candle holder. They also have a wall around the flame that stay relatively thin, as the light would not be able to go through thick layers of stone. These candle holders are small for the most parts but have the glowing factor to their advantage. - Candle holders with flush votives are significantly bigger, the thickness of the stone would block all emission of light going through. No need to push down the votives deep inside. Instead, the design features are all about the shapes and the different layers of sediments. Even without the glow, they are eye-catching candle holders. Their organic shapes and layers of sediments were our only focus when choosing them Recessed or flush, you are getting a piece entirely created by Mother Nature, then carved and shaped by highly skilled artisans.
