About the Item

This pair of hurricane candleholders are by the iconic American firm of Black, Star and Gorham and date from the mid-20th century. They are hallmarked on the bottom "Black, Star & Gorham, Sterling Cement Filled With Rod 2761 and a sea creature". The hurricanes are etched with a swirl pattern that plays beautifully with the candlelight. The base of the hurricane is stamped "Sterling". FYI 1801 The oldest jewelry house in America was founded as Marquand & Paulding in Savannah, Georgia. 1810 Isaac Marquand moved to New York, consolidating the company with several other firms. The first store, Marquand & Company, was a little shop on Broadway in New York City. 1851 They were one of the few American retailers who displayed at the London Crystal Palace Exposition. 1860 Throughout the years, as new partnerships were developed, the company name changed to Ball, Black & Company and was one of the most famous jewelry stores in New York City, designing for Royal families and dignitaries in both Europe and the United States. 1876 Mr. Black took in two new partners, Cortland Starr and Aaron Frost, and the company name changed to Black, Starr & Frost. In 1920, with the addition of a new partner, the company became Black, Starr & Gorham 1929 Merged with Gorham Co becoming Black, Starr & Frost-Gorham Inc at corner of 5th Avenue & 48St. The business was associated with Spaulding-Gorham Inc of Michigan Ave Chicago & 23 Rue de la Paix Paris 1939 Exhibited at New York World’s Fair displaying large sculptural jewelry based on the bold designs of the period.
