Very Fine Early George III Chamberstick Made by Joseph Herriot
The chamberstick has a raised shaped gadrooned rim and the central socket is of plain design with protruding bands. The top is decorated with a corded band and the side handle is decorated with sylised leaf capping. The pan of the chamberstick is finely engraved with a contemporary Armorial surrounded by a cartouche of floral and foliate sprays. The arms are those of the Goodford family of Chilton Cantelo House, County Somerset, impaling those of the Phelps family of Montacute House, County Somerset, specifically for John Old Goodford Esq of Chilton Cantelo, Sheriff of Somersetshire 1774 , and his wife Maria second daughter of Edward Phelps Esq of Montacute House, County Somerset. John Old Goodford died in 1787. The chamberstick is of a scarce early design and would not have had a nozzle, or place for snuffer scissors at this date. This piece is in excellent condition and is very well marked on the base. Measures: Height 3 inches, 7.5cm. Diameter of the base 5.75 inches, 14.38cm. Weight 10oz.
