About the Item

This wonderful 18th century Chinoiserie-Decorated Long Case Clock by Joseph Herring of London features the hood with pagoda top with turned ball finials, the trunk fitted a long trunk door with arch topped door, a case with gold Chinoiserie decoration to the trunk door and base depicting houses, flowers, figures and a man playing a musical instrument. The base features a double plinth and further decoration. The hood boasts attached angle pillars with gilt wooden capitals, glazed access door and inspection windows to the side and a broken arch top with pagoda and three gilt wood finials. This exquisite work was in response to the Oriental craze that swept Europe during the second half of the 18th century, and features an exquisite movement original to the casework. Intriguing architecture includes elaborate molded detail, columns, and a pagoda type "roof", but the intensity and detail of the gold highlighting is a wonder to behold. Every square inch has been decorated with countless motif styles inspired by ancient Chinese and Japanese designs. The pendulum case and base below are particularly exotic with Oriental scenes depicted in minute detail. It also has a working second and date original to the movement! Here's more information: There are records showing Joseph Herring, a watchmaker, apprenticed to John Lorimer of St. Mary's, Whitechapel on 23 Feb 1761 for 5 years and the sum of £21. Baillie records this maker as working in Farringdon in 1793 and states that he was a Liveryman of the Clockmakers Company from 1767 to 1804. Joseph Herring of London is listed as working between 1767-1804 and as Liveryman of the Clockmakers Company. Our work on this particular specimen included a complete overhaul of the clock works including cleaning, pivots polishing, refurbishing of cables and pulleys. etc… The engraved brass time dial and strike 8 day movement is original to this 18th century case.
