Antique Barometer with Royal Society Scales

About the Item

A fine George I period walnut stick barometer in a walnut veneered case on an oak carcase. The design of the case with its stepped pedimented top and three gilt finials (replaced) is inspired by the finest walnut clock cases of the period. The front panel of the stem retains what appears to be the original paper scale for temperature measurement. It shows the Fahrenheit scale with handwritten markings from 10 degrees to 100 degrees and the following indications in the following order: Between 15 and 20 extreme cold. At 30 hard Frost. Between 35 and 40 frosty. 45 Cold air. 55 Temperate. 60 Warm air. 70 Hot. 75 Sultry. 90 Extreme hot. Between 95 and 100 blood heat. Remarkably the engraved brass pointer for the temperature scale appears to be original and there are traces of old gilding on it. The silvered and engraved brass register plates carry the following weather indications which can also be found on barometers by John Patrick. Fair if, rise foul if fall. Very dry hard Frost. Set fair set Frost. Fair Frost. Change able. Rain snow. Much rain much snow. Stormy weather. The 28-31 inch scale is engraved on both register plates and is divided into tenths. There is wheatear engraving to each vertical border and delicate foliate decoration to the top and bottom. Like many early walnut and marquetry stick barometers, this fine example is unsigned. However, although some years later than the work of John Patrick, it bears a number of close resemblances to his work, notably the wording of the scales and the engraving of the register plates, the proportions of the stem, the design and boldness of the turned walnut cistern cover, the detached freestanding hood pillars with capitals and the three finials. The double break arch top and consequent arched top to the register plates enables us to date this barometer between 1715 and 1725.
