About the Item

This superb George I period antique longcase clock by Daniel Delander is cased in highly figured walnut veneer of lovely colour and patina. Standing on a double plinth there is a panelled base and moulded trunk door. The pull forward hood is flanked by quarter columns with brass capitals. The case retains the original caddy top surmounted by two finials. The square dial has an applied chapter ring with cherubin spandrels. The dial centre is finely matted with an engraved date aperture and subsidiary seconds dial. The original blued steel hands appear to be original and are finely wrought and pierced. The movement is of eight day duration striking the hours on a single bell Daniel Delander worked with Thomas Tompion as a journeyman and many of his skills and his techniques were inherited from Tompion. Furthermore, it is known that Delander worked alongside George Graham for a period of time.

A fine Regency longcase clock in the form of a domestic regulator in an architectural mahogany case with inset panels of satinwood and ebonized mouldings. The case of this clock shows the distinct influence of Thomas Hope, the eminent antiquarian and designer who was inspired by the Greek and Egyptian designs. The 12in square brass dial has a silvered finish and is engraved with Roman chapters and subsidiary second’s dial. The dial is signed within the lower section 'Barwise, London'. The eight day duration movement is of the highest quality, with five pillars, dead beat escapement, maintaining power and hour strike on a bell. The pendulum has a wood rod for temperature compensation with beat adjustment and rating nut beneath the brass bob. The clock is complete with the original brass cased weights.
