About the Item

This is a 19th century Fryksdahl Swedish wood clock from Värmland, which is often referred to as a Mora Clock. This clock retains it's original metal face, hands and movement. This Swedish clock is unusual as it is not painted, and the natural grain of the wood is exposed. Its most important accents have been gilded. In the typical Fryksdahl manner, this clock has a rose carving on its crown and is flanked by delicate rosettes. It is also decorated with volutes on its neck and waist. The clock is very sturdy, sitting on a flat base. The belly has a round glass opening and the back has a hole for securing the clock to the wall. Securing the clock was often necessary to ensure that children could not knock them over. The face features crisp, clean Roman numerals. This clock would be wonderful as a decorative object and is not currently in working condition, but can be quartzed to keep perfect time, for an additional cost. A quartz battery would then be added behind the face. The original hands are too heavy to carry the quartz movement, so they would be changed to black hands, similar in style. The clock would then chime (the chime can be turned off even though the sound is quite delightful). A pendulum selected to work with the quartz movement would be added behind the glass opening.
