This remarkable 1895 illumination regulator tower clock is an incredibly rare masterpiece. This clock is one of only a few four-train tower clocks ever produced by the esteemed Ansonia Clock Company. Beautifully preserved, this spectacular tower clock gleams with its original cobalt blue paint embellished with exquisite details. This unique clock features an illumination regulator that adjusts for the differing sunrise and set times as the winter days get shorter. Additionally, the flawless deadbeat escapement, originally introduced by George Graham, keeps the clock’s time incredibly precise. With the heavy 100-pound pendulum and weight, this clock can run for eight days without needing to be wound. Exuding the elegance for which Ansonia was celebrated, this feat of mechanical mastery is only improved by its breathtaking shape and color. In 1884, the growing development of the railroad system across the United States precipitated the need for standardized time zones. Before this, U.S. towns kept their own local time, based on the time when the sun was at its highest point in the sky. As railroads began to shrink the travel time between cities to mere hours, discrepancies between locally kept times became a scheduling nightmare, and standardization became imperative to stay in stride with a modernizing world. Communities became dependent on high-precision tower clocks to stay in sync with their standardized time zone. Thus, tower clocks, such as this incredible timepiece, became essential for all to know the time. Despite the high demand for tower clocks at the turn of the 19th century, only few clockmaking firms were able to produce them. Due to their complex mechanical structure, Ansonia only made between three and four street clocks, the smaller and less complicated version of a tower clock. Finding an Ansonia tower clock, specifically one that is in a perfectly preserved shape, is unheard of. After the 1950s, mechanical powerhouses like this were replaced by motorized timepieces; most working tower clocks were either destroyed or discarded. As a monument to mechanical and historical achievement, this clock is truly in a class of its own. Measures: 67 3/4" high by 20 3/4" wide and 27 3/4" deep.
