About the Item

Grandfather clock. In varnished wood, with a smooth finish and warm tone. The circular gold dial features black Arabic numerals and simple hands, with a classic and elegant design. The top of the cabinet, where the dial is located, has a slightly protruding bezel. The centre column has a recessed panel with a discreet frame, and next to the base there is a round glass display that allows you to see the metal pendulum inside. The base is solid, with straight lines and slight curves on the sides, giving the piece of furniture stability and grandeur. This type of clock is traditionally used in living rooms or halls, and is both functional and decorative. Its style is sober and timeless, suitable for classic or colonial interiors.

This magnificent English longcase, or grandfather, clock boasts a fine rosewood case inlaid with an intricate, balanced design. The face is crafted of chased silver in a foliate motif with fully hallmarked numerals by London silversmith James Stedstone Gouldsmith. The clock is a three-train movement run by three silver-plated weights and a mercury pendulum. The three weights power the time, the hour chime and the quarter-hour chime, and the clock strikes on nine tubular bells with a choice of either Whittington or Westminster chimes. Known commonly as “grandfather” clocks, it was not until the late 19th century that longcase clocks garnered this name.
