Stunning and great quality workmanship clock for the collectors of only the best Gothic antiques. Gothic longcase clocks are a rare find and this more than 7 feet tall specimen for many reasons is the best design and the best quality that we have ever seen. We had not heard of Ferdinand Dencker (of Hamburg, Germany) before, but when we read about his life and work the pieces of this 'puzzle' very quickly fell into place. German maker Ferdinand Dencker (1837-1917) went to Hamburg in 1866 and opened a workshop for making marine chronometers and precision pendulum clocks, his ambition being the minimisation of the so-called middle temperature error. Dencker worked with Jean Moïse Badollet and Charles Henri Meylan in Le Brassus in Switzerland, from where he purchased movements and cases. Between 1903 and 1905 Dencker successfully took part in the chronometer tests at the German naval observatory in Hamburg and was called in as expert by the observatory on several occasions. Among many other achievements, Dencker supplied the master clock for the royal geodesic institute in Potsdam. A man with such ambitions and talent is likely to create the best and the best only and when that is your mission in life, in those days, you would not be able to create a great many pieces. It is for that reason too that this Gothic grandfather clock is an extremely rare Ferdinand Dencker antique. If you have an eye for special antiques then you will immediately recognize several things about this standout-clock. First of all, the overal design is simply stunning and perfectly Gothic in Style. Secondly, incorporated in this superb overal design are a wide variety of Gothic details in several materials. In the base are the most beautifully hand carved folded book pages (out of solid oak). The middle section consists of an oak and mint glass, Gothic church-design window and the exceptional Gothic brass metalwork around it too is among the best you will ever see. In the middle of that amazing brass metalwork (on the left side) is the key hole. This holds the original antique key to this door via which the top quality lock will open and close perfectly. The upper section of this clock starts with a striking handcarved Gothic leaf pattern with a Medieval coat of arms in the middle. Above that is a square section with a perfect circular window in the middle through which you can tell time from the gorgeous and superb condition dial face. Have you also noticed the four stylized 'birds-descending-from-the-sky-patterns' in each corner of this square section? They ofcourse symbolize the Holy Spirit. The mint, blackened brass dial hands too could not be more Gothic with their ancient quatrefoil symbols and Gothic spires at the outer ends. Finally, the jagged Medieval Tower 'roof' with the brass Gothic rosettes in the front is like the icing on the cake of this unique Gothic Revival masterpiece. Thirdly, and for this it helps to be able to see them in person, both the clock mechanism and the pendulum itself are of a thickness, strength and quality like we have never seen before. From this too one can see that Ferdinand Dencker had made it his life's goal to create and sell only the best quality that money can buy. And to us it came to no surprise that this clock runs extremely smoothly and very precise and it strikes perfectly on time as well. The warm and deep gong sound is relatively loud and if you don't like or want a gong sound then you can simply pull a leaver and it will be silent for as long as you want. Fourthly, because of how well this entire clock was made (and one could certainly call this a 'Gesamtkunstwerk'), this has also contributed to its current, excellent, condition. Everything that is top quality made will last a lot longer AND will be purchased by people who understand and therefor more (than most) respect what they are buying and use and treat it accordingly. Like we mentioned earlier. the quality is among the best we have ever seen. And another subtle detail are the large hinges via which the large front door still opens and closes as perfectly as it would have when this clock was handcrafted all those years ago. These thick brass hinges are silvered on the inside. In other words, with this antique Gothic Revival longcase clock and all that it respresents, we believe, Ferdinand Dencker set a whole new standard. One that only very few artisans after him would ever again be able to meet. Over the many decades this one of a kind clock has also grown a marvelous patina and no matter where you decide to have this work of beauty on display, this level of artisanship will never fail to impress and people will want to look and study its tremendous quality and details, TIME and again. This one of a kind clock comes with all the antique glass intact and inside, resting on a wooden bracket is the original and perfect working, 8-day clock mechanism. The stunning dial face with its original, blackened metal or brass hands against the lighter background make it easy to tell time from a distance also. The original and truly great pendulum itself, combined with the two original weights make this unique clock run very smoothly with a calm sounding and evenly running tic-toc. It strikes its deep and warm gong on the whole hours and once on the half hours.
