About the Item

Circa 1770s George III period tall case clock, English, by James Woolley. Oak & mahogany. Works signed "J. Woolley Codnor". James Woolley (c.1695-1786), watch & clockmaker in Codnor, Derbyshire. The broken arch pediment graces a particularly handsome example of Woolley clocks. Mahogany veneers dominate the design, but oak with inlays of boxwood & ebony with geometric stringing create a strong contrast. Nautilus shell inlaid case door. The brass face has applied rococo spandrels with crowns. Moon dial. Works restored: Full disassembly and cleaned movement; Repaired broken Strike train gathering pallet pivot; Repaired damaged escape gear pivot; Replaced strike rack spring; Repaired moon gear function; Replaced worn catgut cables with Stainless steel cable; Polished pivots and replaced several bushings. Runs well. No key for door. Hood rear left upright replaced. 89" h., 19.5" w. at crown, 18.25" w. at base, 9 1/8" d. at floor, 10 1/8" d. at crown.
