About the Item

Irish longcase by Robert Neill, Belfast, circa 1820 This Belfast Chippendale style longcase by Robert Neill is in beautiful condition. It is typically characteristic of an Ulster grandfather clock with excellent quality and modest height. Many buyers in the early 19th century lived in homes of average height ceilings and these clocks were made to suit. The mahogany case has an elegant swan-neck pediment with dentil work. The figuring on the mahogany is particularly pleasing. Free standing columns on the hood with Doric capitals. The entire standing on bracket feet. The movement is eight-day and will strike hours on a bell. The dial is stunning with a riot of colour. Exotic birds, flowers, gilded decorative hands, beautifully illustrated signature and city of origin. The arch housing a fantastic ship in full sail and maps of the world. Elegant Arabic numerals on the dial. Robert Neill - 1775-1857 Watchmaker & Jeweller. When checking out any historial facts on Robert Neill, we came across this - Robert Neill was a quintessential 19th century self-made man, head of a large family that spread with distinction across the United Kingdom and the USA. The son of a baker, he trained as a silversmith, started a successful jewellery and clock business and immersed himself in social reform, notably in the anti-slavery movement. Much social reform in the 19th century was driven by two Christian sects: the Quakers and the Unitarians. This family were passionate Unitarians. Robert and his wife Letitia, née Ireland, had five surviving sons and four daughters. Always very interesting to come across snippets of history of people behind the clocks. This Neill clock as with all clocks from Timepiece, comes with a full mechanical overhaul and guaranteed for a year.
