Gothic Nutwood Grandfather Clock w. Engraved Silver Masonic Provenance Plaque

About the Item

Stunning longcase clock with unique freemason provenance and 3 chimes. This one of a kind and entirely hand-crafted antique clock is another one of our recent great finds. The housing of this clock (or the 'clock case') is made of a combination of hand carved nutwood and nutwood veneered parts and together with the Gothic church window-like pattern in the glass door, they form the base of this Gothic Revival longcase clock. Over the many decades the nutwood has grown a marvelous patina and combined with the patinated brass weights and pendulum (and other parts) they make this antique clock an absolute joy to own and to look at. Besides that this unique clock also is a treat to listen to, because the rare (and perfect working) clock mechanism also comes with a striking/chime mechanism with as many as 12 hammers that can play three chimes. If you look closely at the smaller dial face (above the clock dial face) you can see the three names of the chimes that this clock can play and by manually adjusting that one dial hand you can choose which chime it plays. In our close up photos of the clock mechanism you can see what part operates this chime mechanism and how (and where) the hammers strike the rod-gongs (the blackened ones that are in the back of this clock). One or two hammers can do with a bit of re-adjusting/aiming, but otherwise this gong and chime striking mechanism too works perfectly. By lifting the weights, via the chains (every five days), this Gothic clock will keep telling time in a very accurate manner. It has a very calm swaying pendulum with a low noise tick-tock sound and the chime will play every 15 minutes. On the first quarter it will only play part of the chime and every quarter up to the whole hour the chime will grow a little longer. On the whole hour the chime will play completely plus it will strike as many hours as the small hour-hand indicates. However, in images 14 and 15 you can see that if you are not (always) a fan of striking clocks or chimes, that you can simply turn them off (and back on) by the flick of a switch. This unique clock and how it was made and what it can do and how perfectly it runs would, by itself, be enough to make any clock enthousiast interested in this piece. But what takes this particular clock to the next level is its provenance. And the proof of that provenance is in the hand-engraved and fully hallmarked silver plaque that was created by Spencer & Co of London. The unpolished silver plaque reads: Presented to: Bro. H.G. Patrick by the Secretary and Staff of the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls on his retirement 30th September 1938 The Royal Masonic School for Girls (or RMS) as it is now called, is a private school in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, England, with day and boarding pupils. The school was instituted in 1788, with the aim of caring for the daughters of poor Freemasons. In 1978 the school opened to girls beyond the daughters of freemasons. The school opened in 1789 with fifteen pupils in Somers Town, St Pancras, Middlesex. The school has moved between premises three times, twice within London and in 1934 to Rickmansworth in Hertfordshire, where it still is today. We have left the silver plaque unpolished, because it will really shine when it is polished and we are not certain if the new owner will want that. Besides some truly minor imperfections this unique, meaningful, highly stylish and finest quality workmanship antique clock could not be in better condition. The stunning dial face with its original, blackened brass hands against the lighter background make it easy to tell time from a distance also.
