About the Item

Late 18th Century English Grandfather Clock with Moonphases England (Manchester) Mahogany second half of 18th century Dimensions: H x W x D: 209 x 56 x 25 cm Description: Remarkable English grandfather clock with a clear, calm appearance and pleasant proportions. The neatly crafted case is made of solid mahogany. The door and the front panel of the base are veneered in an attractively grained and mirrored manner. The quarter columns with longitudinal grooves on the sides of the door are framed at the top and bottom by solid, gilded bronze fittings. Four further round columns, also decorated with longitudinal grooves, flank the head of the clock. It almost seems as if these columns are supporting the elegantly curved arched cornice. Behind the old glass we can see the magnificent dial. The centre of the dial is characterised by elaborate chasing. The silver-plated displays for the date and seconds are also located here. The likewise silver-plated chapter ring with Roman numerals is framed by four carefully cast, fire-gilt corner spandrels. In the upper round arch, we first recognise two hemispheres with a network of longitudes and latitudes. Behind them is the extremely tastefully coloured moon phase disc with its idyllic, rural still life. The fine painting is framed by the silver-plated display of the lunar days. The clockmaker's precisely engraved and justifiably proud signature is enthroned above it all: PHILLIP ANTROBUS MANCHESTER. The literature (Brian Loomes - Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World) mentions father and son: Phillip Antrobus Sr. 1690-1762, who did not marry until 1737, and Phillip Antrobus Jr. 1741-1820, who ran his workshop in Butler Lane and is the creator of the clock shown here. Rarely found in English grandfather clock movements is the counting of the hour strike via a lock disc, as is the case here. Another very interesting feature is the rare design of the smoothly operating click, which is fully integrated within the heavy barrel wheel. Condition: The heavy movement is overhauled and works reliably. It also switches the moon phase and the date. The case has been restored while preserving the patina. The wood has been cleaned and the shellac polish has been refreshed. In this context I can recommend the reference book: Derek Roberts - British Longcase Clocks
