Grandfather clock Hall clock (Grandfather clock), American, Gothic Revival styling, oak, late last quarter 19th century to early first quarter twentieth century, Grand Rapids Clock Company, Grand Rapids, Michigan, with an outstanding carved case, nine tube, quarter hour striking movement, tubular chimes consisting of nine tubes, four striking Westminster, eight striking Wittington, separate hour striking tube, with an extraordinary bonnet, five carved Gothic finials as part of the apex (not applique) with central carved finial at top of carved arch with inset carvings along with carved surround above a arched area featuring floral, vine, foliate carvings above a glazed tombstone shaped upper door with carved Gothic styled carved reeding at both sides of door, carved capitals, sides of bonnet with arched Gothic carvings, above horizontal band of carvings as continuation to frontal carved arch, carved square side window with Goth styled carved fret, above waist section with glazed central door having Gothic styled carved applique work, Gothic carved surrounds at each side, linen fold carvings at sides, above a base section with a heavily carved upper base molding with deep carving, centrally carved base panel with Gothic styled arches, along with carved stiles at each side of central panel. All above heavy base molding Dial: One of the most beautiful quarter hour striking dials I have seen, consisting of raised brass carvings of floral, vine and foliates throughout central area, silvered raised chapter ring, carved Arabic applied hour numerals, each within an engraved circle, engravings between hours to outer minute engravings, two subsidiary dials, raised chapter rings, silvered and engraved with carved brass centers, strike/silent at left side with blued steel hand, tune selection dial at right side with its blued steel hand, carved brass center, raised silvered and engraved ring, wonderful brass carvings at spandrel areas, independent seconds dial, raised silvered chapter ring with engraved seconds below “12”, blued carved hour and minute hands, intricately carved brass central area, with three winding apertures, all below lunette with silvered and engraved lunar duration with painted lunar disc below Movement: Typical three train quarter hour tubular striking movement of definite Elliot styling, completely original to the case, finely cut steel pinions, anchor escapement, independent seconds, lunar cycle, quarter hour striking on Harrington styled tuned tubes, highly polished, movement signed Grand Rapids Clock Company, tune selection featuring Wittington and Westminster striking. It plays Westminster 4 notes 15 minutes after the hour, then 8 notes 30 minutes after, then 12 notes 45 minutes after, then 16 notes on the hour & then chimes the hour. Alternatively, It can play Whittington the same way except starting with 8 notes at the quarter hour, then 16 notes, 24 notes & 32 notes on the hour followed by the hour chimes. Condition: Case in wonderful condition with no evidence of replaced carving or applique, mechanics original to case including dial, weights and pendulum, key and crank, exceptional tone to tubular chimes.
