Louis XVI model "swinging lyre" pendulum clock bronze and marble

About the Item

Beautiful and rare Louis XVI clock of the "swinging lyre" model. Chiseled and gilt bronze musical lyre-shaped case, decorated with Minerva's head on the top, laurel leaves on the sides, and a sunflower below the dial. The whole rests on an oval white marble base with four gilded bronze feet. White enamel dial with black enamel Arabic numerals. Chiseled, gilded and openwork hour and minute hands. Burnished bronze seconds hand. Blue enamel signature. Due fori di carica. French gilt brass movement with hour and half-hour chime on bell. In the "oscillating" model, the movement and dial oscillate to mark time. Metal suspension. 8-day charge. Signed on the dial "L'echopié a Paris." France, eighteenth circa 1780 . Louis XVI period. Dimensions: 46 H cm, 19 L cm, 11 D cm. Notes The "lyre" model was very successful during the time of Louis XVI. A number of variations are known. Several examples are also illustrated by P. Kjellberg in his Encyclopédie de la Pendule française, but also on Tardy's LES PLUS BELLES PENDULES FRANCAISES, and Hans Ottomeyer's VERGOLDETE BRONZEN. Lyre clocks have made parts of important collections around the world, and some are now exhibited in major museums, such as two lyre clocks by watchmakers Jean-Michel Harel ( (inv. PE 1531). and one by the watchmaker Bourdier (1774-1791) (inv. 22561) are preserved at the musée des Arts décoratifs in Paris. Also in Paris at the Musée-Cognacq-Jay is a lyre clock in blue porcelain. Another blue porcelain lyre clock is part of the collection of the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, U.S.A., and yet another one is in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, U.K. Also of note is a skeleton lyre clock illustrated in the work by P. Heuer and K. Maurice entitled European Pendulum Clocks. This very finely carved clock bears the signature of Hubert Sarton, a watchmaker working in Liège, on the dial, thus demonstrating the widespread use of this very fashionable model in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. News about watchmaker Adam L'echopié is available in the book "Dictionnaire des Horlogers Francaise" by TARDY on page 357.
