About the Item

Robert Mouseman Thompson three train longcase clock, manufactured 1970s. An extremely rare Robert Thompson three train longcase clock. Solid hand worked English oak case, three train movement by Sinclair Harding, Cheltenham. These clocks were only made to special order. This particular clock was part of a large order for Mouseman furniture placed by an Australian family in 1971 and has been in the same family ever since. With original winding handle and brass cased weights. The clock is currently in original untouched sound condition. It would benefit from a full service which we can undertake in our workshop. Alternatively, the purchaser may prefer to ship to its final destination before undertaking a service. Robert (Mouseman) Thompson (7 May 1876-8 December 1955) was a British furniture maker. He lived in Kilburn, North Yorkshire where he set up a business manufacturing oak furniture which featured a carved mouse on almost every piece. It is believed that the mouse motif came about accidentally in 1919 following a conversation about "being as poor as a church mouse" which took place between Thompson and one of his colleagues. This chance remark led to him carving a mouse and this remained part of his work from that point onwards. He was part of the 1920s revival of craftsmanship inspired by the Arts & Crafts movement led by William Morris. The workshop is now run by his descendants and includes a showroom and visitors centre. It is located beside the Parish Church which contains "Mouseman" pews, fittings and other furniture. The company is now known as "Robert Thompson's Craftsmen Ltd – The Mouseman of Kilburn." Mouseman furniture is extremely sought after by collectors worldwide. Sinclair Harding was established in 1967 and continues the tradition of fine English clock making, renowned for precision, quality and perfection. The company was originally founded by Bill Sinclair and Mike Harding and was based in Cheltenham, England and later taken over by Robert Bray who has continued traditional methods of English clock making.
