18th Century France Louis XVI Gilt Mantel Clock by Lepine, 1790s

About the Item

Wonderful golden clock, signed Jean-Antoine Lépine, (born November 18, 1720, Challex, France, Died May 31, 1814 (aged 93)Paris, France) a wonderful example of the art of this great watchmaker. For more information on the author of this watch, I refer you to Wikipedia: Digit Jean-Antoine Lepine. Mantel clock of the late 18th century, the watch shows wear due to time, to be restored and controlled mechanism. Anchor mechanism or silk thread, on the dial small lacks of enamel near the ring charge hole. Imposing clock but of a grace out of the common one, well chiseled but not too much, we find the just compromise between elegance and opulence. We are faced with a work of art, both in terms of form and the importance of the author. This is the second watch of the famous Lepine that we have the honor of having in our shop.

  • Mantel Clock 18th Century Louis XVI
    Located in Warsaw, PL
In contrast to the preceding style which was the Rococo, the Louis XVI style shows growing importance for individual parts of the whole, clarity, and harmony where hard edges and corners are avoided. Often bronze and white marble are used in combination. The classical ornaments are borrowed from Greek and Roman antiquity and the style often is referred to as goût grec (Greek taste). This beautiful mantel clock adorned with burnished and gilded bronze focuses on the allegory of astronomy. The composition of bronzes, helps the viewer intellectually understand the concept of Astronomy and its importance. The two burnished bronze putti figures are reclined against the clock’s case, each one holding a gilded element symbolizing astronomy. The two putti are visibly fulfilling their astronomical calculations diligently. The composition seems humorous and shows the lightheartedness of the period, because of the translation of serious studies of science and philosophy into a childish-serious play. The dial is housed in a gilded bronze curved pediment decorated with laurel wreath garlands on each side. The enamel dial consist of finely gilded hands, Roman numerals for hours and Arabic numerals for minutes. Winding holes on the dial indicate that this dial is truly from the 18th century as one of the holes overlaps the number VII, which is a characteristic element that helps distinguish the origin of the clocks. The case of the clock is surmounted by an urn adorned richly with acanthus and pearl motifs as well as gadrooning. The classical ornaments of the Louis XVI style often appear as ancient urns...
