About the Item

We offer a French 19th century, elongated, rectangular, gilt ormolu mantle clock with decorative porcelain panels. The time piece is surmounted by a squat, cylindrical, lidded, neoclassical urn with figural handles trailing floral garlands and, banded in the centre with a porcelain girdle decorated with two sevres blue ribbons, framing a multi-colored wreath of flowers, against a white background. The body of the clock has three, large, sevres-blue ornamental panels: one on the front, and one on either side. The front panel consists of the clock face with Roman numerals against white ovals, framed with gilt, and surrounded and interspersed by foliate gilt sprays. The hands are mounted to a round dial depicting song birds and butterflies in a flower garden. Below the clock-face is a trapezoidal figural landscape of a courting couple: the painting also framed and banded in gilt. The side panels are decorated in the same manner as the clock-face, with gilt-framed elongated panels of birds hovering in a flower garden at the bottoms. The porcelain sides are further decorated with cascading garlands of gilt ormolu, trailing down from the urn handles to the centre of the panels. Two small rectangular porcelain panels of floral garland, framed with blue and gilt are framed on either side of the front of the rectangular raised and chased ormolu base. The rectangular plinth rests on four chased gilt bun feet. The works are housed behind a hinged and gilded door at the back. The double wind pendulum clock is in good working order, and chimes on the half-hour and the hour.
