About the Item

Late 19th century french Louis XVI ormolu gilt bronze mantel clock by Lamerie-Charpentier & Cie. By: Lemerle-Charpentier & Cie. Material: bronze, glass, marble, metal, ormolu Technique: cast, gilt, metalwork, molded, polished Dimensions: 8 in x 17 in x 20 in Date: Late 19th Century, circa 1890 Style: Louis XVI, Napoleon III, Rococo Revival, Neoclassicism, Empire Place of origin: France This late 19th century french gilt bronze mantel clock exemplifies the Louis XVI, popular during the reign of Napoleon III. Cast by the eminent parisian bronze foundry Maison Lemerle-Charpentier & Compagnie, active between 1870 and 1890, the clock features a red marble base supporting a bronze case ornamented with applied figural mounts depicting a woman and child. Lemerle-Charpentier was renowned for fine quality clock sets and gilt bronze objects in the prevailing historicist modes. Their work blended technical virtuosity with design excellence, bringing french bronze casting to new heights. This handsome mantel timepiece demonstrates their mastery of elaborate surface decoration and carefully balanced asymmetrical composition which, as in this case, lean toward designs and motifs closer to Neoclassicism.
