About the Item

A exquisite and monumental 19th century German bisque porcelain mantel clock depicting the Three Graces. This impressive late 19th-century mantel clock is beautifully crafted in matte white bisque porcelain and mounted with finely cast gilt metal accents. At the center, a circular enamel dial is framed by a delicate gilt bezel, featuring Arabic numerals and multicolored garlands of hand-painted roses. The dial is surmounted by a fluted column crowned with a classical urn adorned with myrtle, a symbolic motif drawn from Greco-Roman tradition. Encircling the base of the column are three nude female figures—The Three Graces—goddesses of beauty, charm, and creativity in Greek mythology. Elegantly posed in a triangular arrangement and joined by a garland of roses, the figures are modeled in the round with refined detail and grace, evoking the timeless aesthetic of classical sculpture. Their serene expressions and fluid gestures convey an air of harmony and poetic movement, emblematic of their mythological role as attendants of Aphrodite. The sculptural group rests upon a rectangular plinth adorned in low relief with playful putti and young women engaged in reading and music-making, enhancing the lyrical and celebratory tone of the piece. The warm gilt metal elements contrast beautifully with the white bisque finish, which mimics the purity of carved marble while showcasing the extraordinary modeling and textural precision. Bearing the blue underglaze mark of the esteemed Volkstedt-Rudolstadt manufactory in Thuringia, Germany, this clock reflects the neoclassical revival style favored in European decorative arts during the late 19th century. A rare and poetic union of mythological symbolism and fine horology, this clock makes a dramatic statement in any refined interior.
