Antique French Gilt Bronze Rococo Clock by Samuel Marti

About the Item

A stunning original antique French gilt bronze clock by Samuel Marti. Beautifully made in he Rococo style, formed of sinuous curves of acanthus and scrolls, pieced to allow the pendulum to be glimpsed gently swinging within. Applied motifs and a gadrooned urn complete the design. The dial is porcelain enamel on copper with blued steel hands. The French movement is of high quality and is by Samuel Marti. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is a replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. We have a video of the clock, please ask and we will send you a link. Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with hardly any wear or discolouration. The dial is also excellent with no damage. There are a few light scratches on the original glass. Samuel Marti clockmaker's mark on the movement backplate Complete with pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.     Repaired: Fully overhauled and working. Wear consistent with age and use. A very large and fine antique French clock set, circa 1880. It is of Rococo design boldly modeled in gilt bronze. Waisted keyhole shape with acanthus leaf shoulders, 'C' scroll feet standing on its original integral base. The top adorned with a putti and a musical instrument. To the sides are sound frets. The large dial is porcelain. The design is attributed to by the highly inventive and influential rococo goldsmith and architect Juste-Aurèle Meissonnier (1695-1750). Born in Turin, Meissonnier emigrated to France to work in the royal Gobelins factory in 1724 and in 1726 succeeded Jean II Bérain as architect and draughtsman to the Chambre et Cabinet du Roi. His designs for candelabra and other objects appear in the Dousieme livre des Oeuvres de J. A. Messonnier, Livre de Chandeliers de Sculpture en Argent published by Gabriel Huquier in the 1740s. French Red Tortoiseshell Boulle clock, Samuel Marti, Paris. Red tortoiseshell case inlaid with fine brass decoration surmounted by an ormolu finial, ormolu mounts and standing on raised bracket feet. The front of the case with glazed viewing aperture behind a central ormolu mount. The sides of the case decorated with fishscale fret decoration. Gilded and chased dial with individual blue enamel numerals and original ‘blued’ steel hands. Eight day French movement with starburst pendulum, anchor escapement and outside countwheel, striking the hours and halves on a silvered bell.
