Antique French Rococo Vernis Martin Lacquer Clock by Planchon - Paris

About the Item

A stunning antique French Vernis Martin style lacquer clock, Circa 1890. The exquisite waisted, lacquered eau de nil case is decorated with delicate floral swags and mounted with gilt bronze. The gilt metal cherub sits aloft, offering a bouquet of flowers. The fine porcelain enamel dial is complete with its original finely incised and engraved gilt hands. It is signed in homage to the 18th century clockmaker Paul Leautier of Paris. The French movement is of high quality and is by Planchon of Paris. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is an old replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. We have a video of the clock running, please ask and we will send you a link. Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with hardly any wear or discolouration. The cherub has been re-lacquered. The lacquer is also in lovely condition with an old craquelure, marks, discolouration and losses to the edges that only add to the antique character of the clock. There is some touching up the lacquer to the right of the dial. The dial is excellent with no damage. Mathieu Planchon is listed in Tardy, Dictionnaire Des Horloges Francais.
