About the Item

This wonderful mantel clock was crafted in the 19th century by the famous Parisian horology company, Charles Oudin. The back of the clock face is stamped ‘Ch. Oudin, Palais Royal 52’, indicating that the piece was made when the firm was based at number ’52’ on the Palais-Royal, a fashionable shopping district in Paris. We can infer that the clock was crafted between 1812 — when Oudin set up shop at this address — and 1845, when the company moved to the Galerie Montpensier. Charles Oudin was one of the most important clockmakers of the 19th century. The firm sold their clocks and watches to European royalty, and won awards for their work at the Exhibitions of the Products of French Industry in the early 19th Century, and the International Exhibitions of the 1860s. Today, Oudin items can be viewed in major museums in both France and elsewhere in Europe, and they are highly sought-after by private collectors. This silvered and gilt clock has been fashioned in the French Orientalist Islamic style. The piece stands on a square platform, which is raised up by four toupie feet. This base, like the lower part of the clock case, is edged with pierced trefoil decoration. The clock case is cube-shaped, and stands on four, outward-scrolling feet. At the centre of the front facade of the silvered bronze clock case, there is a circular, gilt bronze dial, featuring black Roman Numerals and trefoil-ended hands. This is framed below by gilt bronze scrolling, foliate shapes, and is topped by a pierced dome. The sides of the case are similarly decorated, but feature central pierced medallions rather than dials. Above, the corners of the case case are topped by pointed finials, and the centre surmounted by a dome, decorated with pierced and free-standing, curling organic ornament. This dome extends upwards, forming a second dome, which is pierced with foliate patterns and stars, all topped by a pointed finial with a crescent moon end. Charles Oudin was one of the finest clockmakers of the 19th century, and this Orientalist Islamic style piece is testimony to the company’s skill and ingenuity in design.

This mantel clock is a wonderful piece of French Neoclassical design. It is an unusual and very beautiful item, which has been expertly crafted from gilt bronze (ormolu). The clock will add elegance and sophistication to a mantelpiece. The clock features a table-form body which is topped by a classical urn. The urn is crowned by a pomegranate finial and mounted with twin handles in the shape of rams’ heads with rings in their mouths. The urn is decorated with twisted and cabled fluting, a belt draped with foliate swags, panelled motifs and a ropework band. The urn stands on a table-shaped body which is surmounted by outward-pointing pinecone finials and laurel branches. The stepped tabletop has scalloped corners and is decorated with an egg-and-dart and leaf-and-dart band, as well as a central Green Man mask.
