About the Item

A belgian Art Deco blue ceramic Majolique mantel clock set by Manufacturer Faïencerie de la Majolique de Wasmuel. This fireplace clock has a matching a pair of vases. The pieces of blue faience are coated in pewter or glazed, from the moorish tradition, richly decorated with colored detailed glazes. The pieces have the maker's marks and the complete original mechanism from the Manufacturer Faïencerie de la Majolique de Wasmuel, Belgium. The clock is in working condition and operates with a wind-up mechanism. The word "majolica" (maiolica) is synonymous of faience. The term "majolica" comes from Majorca, a city where ceramics transit through the late Middle Ages. The majolica belongs to the category of earthenware called "decorated with fire on raw enamel" in which a white and opaque earthenware is obtained.
