About the Item

One of his more complex designs, Art Donovan's illuminated "Moon Clock" is bold, contemporary and inspired by the luxurious and ornate Astronomical clocks of Europe. The crown is a glowing "Moon" dome in translucent Lucite, which is finely reverse-painted to effect the textural surface of the Moon. Below the Moon is an illuminated Lucite disk with green-glass edges that cast the light outward and down the body of the piece. It is supported by a square, maple wood case with a glowing glass "eye" that houses the interior illumination for the Moon dome. The clock face features modern graphic treatments and is divided vertically down the center. On the left side is a night sky, a field of stars hand painted on matte black. On the right side, warm gray has been hand painted with concentric white and gold rings. The "target " clock hands and smoothly sweeping second hand are custom made. At the tip of the second hand is a solid brass hemisphere, hand painted as a beautiful, full moon. A floating brass ring that surrounds the clock face adds a modernist element to the design. The clock is supported in the front by two solid brass legs that echo a mariner's compass / dividers. The pendulum features brass, warm gray and black details with a burnished, brass disk upon which is a realistic, "All Seeing Eye" has been hand painted. The pendulum post consists of twin brass rods with a graphic black detail, top and bottom. Although technically categorized as a "clock' , this design is a visually striking illuminated statement, as it is mounted under a tall glass dome with a solid maple base with a honeycomb brass surface. The lamp switch / control for the illuminated "Moon Clock" is located on the right side of the base.
