About

An ormolu-mounted marble figural mantel clock After a model by Clodion By Henry Dasson The nude bacchante recumbent figure raised on a bleu turquin marble and ormolu-mounted plinth, the mythical figure resting on a lion’s pelt, the tambourine-shaped bezel with tassel handle housing an enamel dial with gilt-lined royal blue border and raised gilt fleur-de-lys half hour markers, signed on a banner to the center 'HRY DASSON', pierced and engraved ormolu hands, the twin barrel movement striking on a bell. Signed and dated “Henry Dasson 1880;” the carved marble signed “Ernest Carrier-Belleuse.” French, dated 1880 Literature: The figure is based on a life-size model of a naiad - a fresh water nymph - by Claude-Michel Clodion (1738-1814) created as part of a design for a bath house. Henry Dasson participated in the Amsterdam exhibition of 1883 alongside his contemporaries Beurdeley, Krieger, and Fourdinois. Among the thirteen pieces of furniture and objects d’art, Dasson exhibited a clock (no. 24) the description of which matches exactly to the present model. An early example of this clock was acquired by George IV in 1792, and is today in the Royal Collection (RCIN 30043).
