Early 19th Century Empire Mantel Clock by Ledure with Apollo or Eros

About the Item

The clock is signed on the enamel dial by the famous Parisian bronzier ”Ledure Bronzier à Paris” and the clockmaker ”Hedon Hr" (horloger). Patinated and fully sculpted bronze figure of the young Apollo (or Eros), depicted as a nude holding a gilt bronze butterfly in his hand as an Apollonian allegory of victorious love or in relation to the clock suggesting the fragile victory of love over time and death. A very fine mantel clock in authentic condition. Pierre-Victor Ledure (1783-184?) was one of the leading bronziers in the early 19th century, with an extensive and influential clientèle. Several important collections contain his work, like the Royal Pavilion in Brighton. Born in Paris, Ledure became an apprentice of the famous bronzier André-Antoine Ravrio (1759-1814), who became one of his best friends. Claude Hémon was established rue de St. Martin, circa 1810-1820.
