About the Item

18h century Georgian English bracket clock. A fine quality mahogany and ormolu-mounted Georgian III English Bracket. Exquisite bracket clock made by the watchmaker Thomas Lozano, signed in London, in 18th century England. This table clock has a mahogany-veneered frame or case (bracket), with brass machinery and chiseled and gilded bronze applications. Double white dial, the signature “THOª LOZANO EN LONDRES” appears on the main one. Roman numerals for hours and Arabic numerals for minutes; and openwork needles. The upper and smaller dial is the seconds hand. London Machinery: eight days of winding, square plates, the rear one engraved, striking on a bell (1 tone at the half, 5 tones at the hours). The structure of the clock is architectural, composed of a molded base, a façade with a central arch and an upper cornice that supports the slope-shaped finish. On the sides, classicist decorations in gilded bronze are divided into two cartouches, the main one with a mask that represents the rising sun. On the back, an immense repertoire of candelieri motifs. About Thomas Lozano Tomás Lozano, a native of Cadiz, traveled to London in the mid-18th century to strengthen the trade. The son of a watchmaker, he wanted to learn outside the borders of his country. In the British city he was apprenticed to master John Marrie at Saint Jame's Wetminster. After a few years, he finally opened two stores, one in London and another in Cadiz. A copy of his work is preserved in the Metropolitan Museum in New York. In the book published by Antonio de Sancha in 1776 the following is said: "Another resident of Cádiz, named Don Tomás Lozano, a master watchmaker, has also practiced with his son of the same name what is recommended in popular education about sending some individuals to foreign countries to learn or perfect themselves in the arts useful to the public. Lozano sent his son to the city of London to learn the art of watchmaking, and after having been there for five years as a young man and seven as an apprentice, he was received as a master with all the preeminent exemptions of a citizen of London, where He set up his shop and teacher's workshop. Having left there an officer of his satisfaction, who works under his name, six or seven years ago he came with his English Catholic wife to live with his father in Cádiz. There he has made a new clock for the Town Halls and has proven so successful that he ships a very large portion of samples, and pendulum clocks: both for this Peninsula and for America."
