About the Item

A captivating three-piece mantel clock, from 19th century France, crafted in Siena marble and gilt bronze, with multiple stylistic reference points from the Grand Tour of Europe. The architectural clock tower at center features a cast bronze lion sitting proudly upon the lintel from which the case hangs, supported by marble columns with Empire-style brass mounts. Protective glass encloses the clock dial, using a concealed hinge to open for winding and setting the time original key included. The clock will chime when provoked but does not keep time–please contact your local horologist for an estimate. The pierced brass door on the back opens to access the mechanism for service, with the name “L. Latour” etched into the metal case. A representation of the French Imperial Eagle forms the pendulum. Flanking the clock are two accessory pedestals in the same ochre-toned Siena marble, mounted with exquisite bronze urns of elaborate Neoclassical motifs in the style of bronziers Choiselat & Gallien.
