About the Item

An impressive and very unusual Antique French Louis XVI style figural mantel clock composed of gilt bronze, white marble, rouge marble and dark green marble signed on the enamel dial E. Lemoine à Paris. The clock’s form is that of a classical temple pavilion, raised on a stepped oval base and surmounted by a white enamel circular dial enclosed within a gilt bronze laurel wreath. The dial features Arabic numerals and garlands of floral swags, and is housed in a cylindrical drum-form case backed in brass. The signature appears clearly at the center of the dial. The architectural frame supporting the clock includes eight red marble spiral columns adorned with applied gilt bronze oak-leaf garlands and suspended chains, encircling a central gilt bronze female allegorical figure standing on a white marble platform. The structural composition rests on a stepped plinth with three ascending white marble stairs leading to the center. The columns are evenly spaced around the clock’s lower section and terminate in square gilt bronze bases. A pierced gilt bronze gallery with foliate scrollwork encircles the upper platform, punctuated by four urn-form finials in red marble with gilt bronze mounts. The topmost element is a red marble urn surmounted by a gilt pinecone finial and flanked by ram’s-head handles and floral swags. The columnar pavilion is supported by a base of dark green marble resting on four gilt toupie feet. The use of contrasting materials, including red griotte marble, white marble, and green marble, combined with chased and cast gilt bronze mounts, is consistent with French production of the late 19th century inspired by Louis XVI architectural motifs. The inclusion of the female figure, floral garlands, and classical urns aligns with neoclassical iconography popular in Parisian decorative arts workshops. The clock's design and construction suggest it was produced by a high-quality French foundry specializing in luxury clocks and decorative bronzes during the late 1800s.
