About the Item

The impressive and unusual clock is designed in an architectural form, featuring a cylindrical drum case mounted on a white marble pedestal and surmounted by a red marble urn finial with a gilt acorn top, flanked by gilt-bronze handles and floral swags. The white enamel dial, signed “E. Lemoine,” is encircled by a beaded gilt-bronze bezel and framed by a laurel wreath. The dial displays Arabic numerals for hours and minutes, with painted floral garlands between the numerals and pierced gilt-bronze hands. Four small red marble urns with gilt-bronze finials and handles are arranged around the base of the dial section, set on a circular gallery of openwork scrolling foliage. Below, eight spiral red marble columns with gilt-bronze oak-leaf garlands support the upper section, joined by suspended gilt chains with tassels, and resting on a white marble stepped platform centered by a gilt-bronze female figure holding a cornucopia. The base is further enriched with applied gilt-bronze leaf friezes and rests on an oval green marble plinth with gilt-bronze rope-twist edging and toupie feet. This clock is signed on the dial by E. Lemoine, a known French clockmaker active in the 19th century. The signature is visible on the white enamel dial, which is also decorated with delicate floral garlands typical of the period. The design and execution reflect the precision and luxury materials favored by French makers of the Louis XVI revival style in the 1800s. The use of multiple colored marbles combined with detailed gilt-bronze mounts is consistent with the elaborate presentation clocks of the time. E. Lemoine’s work aligns with the tradition of Parisian clockmaking in the 19th century, where cases were often produced by specialized bronziers and fitted with movements from established horologists. The combination of red, white, and green marble with ormolu mounts recalls the opulent style developed during the reign of Louis XVI and revived in the mid-to-late 1800s. The architectural columned design and figural ornamentation seen here are hallmarks of this style, emphasizing symmetry, classical motifs, and the integration of sculpture into functional decorative art.
