French 19th century Marble and Ormolu clock, by Chaumont & Languereau

About the Item

A stunning and most impressive French 19th century Louis XVI st. Marble and Ormolu clock, by Chaumont & Languereau. This large scale clock is raised by six Ormolu toupie shaped feet with gadrooned edges supporting an intricately carved statuary white Marble base below a richly chased berried laurel wreath. Above is a white Marble podium decorated with Ormolu rosettes which supports the clock face flanked by S-scroll Ormolu mounts. The mounts end with volutes and are decorated with berried laurel vines, while being centered by a ribboned reed amid richly chased foliate movements. The clock face features Roman numerals to indicate the hours, and Arabic numerals for the minutes, and is crowned with a Marble and Ormolu Urn of Prosperity. The impressive urn is decorated with swaging berried laurel garlands and a finely detailed Byzantine braid border. Chaumont & Languereau were distinguished 19th-century French clockmakers celebrated for their refined craftsmanship and classically inspired mantel and bracket clocks. Based in Paris, their work combined precision horology with elaborate bronze and marble cases, often reflecting the grandeur of the Louis XVI and Empire styles. Their clocks remain sought after for their elegant proportions and decorative artistry.
