French Celestial Skeleton Clock

About the Item

This Louis-Philippe-era skeleton clock is a fine example of mid-19th century clockmaking. Retailed by Jouffroy of Paris, the celestial-themed timepiece has six dials for indicating the time, day of the week, date, month, and moon phase, as well as one to signify the solstices and equinoxes. Each dial is distinguished by lovely enamel faces and Breguet hands. The entire clock is attached to a mahogany plinth and is securely displayed beneath its glass dome enclosure. This clock was clearly crafted for accuracy, as it boasts a complicated gridiron pendulum. This type of pendulum has nine alternating zinc and steel rods that expand and contract at different rates due to changes in temperature. So, whether hot or cold, the clock will provide the most accurate time possible. The mechanism also features a pin-pallet escapement, with the weights for going and striking concealed within the two brass columns surmounted by globe finials. Skeleton clocks are among the most exceptional and intriguing timepieces ever made, and were designed to display as much of the working mechanism as possible, demanding the highest quality workmanship. These magnificient timepieces were some of the earliest clocks, and some known as drum clocks date to the mid-16th century. French skeleton clocks in particular are known for their refined mechanisms and overall complexity. This specimen, with its main time face, five auxiliary dials and components intended specifically for accuracy, is an outstanding find for the clock enthusiast.
