French Charles X Gilt Bronze Mantel Clock, Henri Robert, 19th Century

About the Item

A French gilt bronze mantel clock by Henri Robert, circa 1880. The decorative case with bevelled glass inserts, decorative floral swags and surmounted by a floral draped urn. The ceramic dial with Roman numerals inscribed 'Henri Robert Hgr. de la Marines, Paris Faubg Saint-Honoré (Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré). The quality French two train movement with outside count wheel and stamped with serial number 2661, chimes hours and half hours on a bell. The maker, Henri Robert, Paris, worked in the fourth quarter 19th century, (see Tardy page 561). Henri Robert began clockmaking in 1867 with his more famous father, also called Henri. Henri senior (1795-1874) studied under the great master Abraham Louis Breguet and made top quality clocks, watches and marine chronometers.
