French Clock, Directoire Period, Portico Form, Signed Revel Paris

About the Item

A French Directoire ormolu mounted black marble portico clock of Egyptian temple form. Set upon ormolu toupee feet with a rectangular black marble base. Black marble columns rise up to a triangular marble tympanum. The well made marble case applied with high quality fire/mercury gilt original ormolu mounts of floral reeds, Egyptian caryatids, and winged demi-figures, probably Harpies and also hypographs. The dial, of fine perfect convex enamel and signed simply Revel is set within a fine ormolu bezel with concentric circles of beading and acanthus leaf decoration. The movement of early form with silk suspension, flat bottomed plates, silk suspended and visible sunburst pendulum. The clock strikes the hours and halves on a bell by means of the countwheel system of striking. A most stylish and original clock in excellent condition. Joseph Revel (d. 1828) was a clockmaker of considerable ability working in Paris from 1774 at Vieille Rue du Temple and after 1783 for a decade at the Palais Royal, and latterly at the Palais Tribunat to 1806. There is a clock by him of similar date in Stockholm Castle.
