French Empire Gilt Bronze "Love Reading" Clock circa 1810

About the Item

Finely chiseled, patinated and gilded bronze clock from the Early Empire period, depicting "Love Reading." Circa 1810. Very well preserved original mercury gilding. Original movement signed "Blanc et fils Palais Royal" complete with balance wheel. A beautiful Empire-style mantel clock. The Cupid reading the book is a rare and much sought-after subject . Even today it is still a decorative element suitable for almost any interior. 8-day movement with chime counting wheel on bell with silk suspension. Enameled dial with Roman numerals and beautiful original Breguet hands. The contrast between the patinated parts and the flame-gilt bronzes makes the clock the centerpiece of any decor.
