ROBERT OSMOND (1711 - 1789)
He was born in Canisy, France and began his apprenticeship at the workshop of Louis Regnard. He received the title of maitre fondeur on January 17, 1745 in Paris. From 1764 to 1775 he worked with his nephew Jean Baptiste Osmond (1742-after 1790) who also became maitre in 1764. They work for years closely, to such an extent that it is difficult to distinguish between the contributions of each. They produce all kinds of decorative objects, including fire-dogs, inkwells and appliqua, but the only works in existence today are clocks.
Robert Osmond is recognized as one of the most prolific bronzesmiths in the history of France, he is enormously successful under the reigns of Louis XV and Louis XVI, his works are enormously appreciated, and although he does not fully embrace the style of the period in its most extreme forms, thanks to the appointment of Jurè, he is able to obtain a degree of protection of his creative rights. Robert appears to be retiring around 1775. his nephew Jean-Baptiste, who remains in charge of the laboratory after his uncle retires, encounters numerous difficulties, leading to his bankruptcy in 1784. Robert Osmond died in 1789.
Many of Osmond's clocks are now preserved in the world's most important museums. Some examples are the clock depicting the Rape of Europa housed at the Getty Museum, California, as well as two cartel pendulums sitaute at the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm and the Nissim de Camondo Museum in Paris.
