About the Item

French red marble and gilt bronze Neoclassical style matched clock set French, late 19th Century Clock: Height 70cm, width 57cm, depth 23cm Candelabra: Height 70cm, width 31cm, depth 24cm This elegant three-piece matched clock set features a mantel clock and a pair of candelabra, each of which is crafted from red marble and gilt bronze in the Neoclassical style. The mantel clock features a shaped red marble base mounted with gilt bronze elements, such as a classical mask to the front centre and scrolling acanthus leaf feet to either side. The base supports the pedestal-form clock drum, which is crafted from gilt bronze and inset with a red marble dial. The drum is adorned with scrolling brackets, draped swags, and three medallions. A large figure of a reading woman leans against the drum, her form and dress distinctly classical in appearance. The candelabra are similarly decorated. Each candelabrum features a red marble base raised above a gilt bronze plinth, with a vase-form red marble body above. The body, mounted with Neoclassical style gilt bronze elements, supports the candelabrum head, which issues six scrolling light branches. The dial and movement are signed for Lermerle Charpentier.

This fine clock set is crafted in patinated bronze, red marble and ornamented throughout with exquisite ormolu. It is the work of Lemerle-Charpentier & Cie, a French company highly celebrated for their superlative clock sets and garnitures. The set comprises a central clock and a pair of flanking candelabra. The clock is set on an oval plinth of red marble with ormolu feet. To the front of the plinth is set a relief panel in patinated bronze. Upon the plinth is set a fluted column of patinated bronze with ormolu flowers and banding, surmounted by an ormolu urn. The circular clock dial is set to the front of the column, with a face of red marble and Roman numerals in ormolu. Next to the clock face column stands the full length figure of the Greek goddess of hunting, Diana, holding a torch cast in patinated bronze. The pair of flanking candelabra are set on square plinths of red marble with canted angles and ormolu feet. Atop this are set fluted columns of patinated bronze, and an ovoid urn with relief panels with reliefs of classical figures on the main body and twin ormolu handles.
