About the Item

French ormolu and white marble pillar clock with ormolu mounts surmounted by an ornate finial with and standing on four gilded bun feet. The four pillars have fine ormolu mounts and are decorated with ornate chain swags. Enamel dial with Arabic numerals and finely cut original gilded hands. Eight day French striking movement with outside countwheel and starburst pendulum, circa 1870 An exceptionally fine French pillar clock.

French white marble and Ormolu mantel clock by Samuel Marti. White marble case with stepped raised plinth with ormolu mounts and beaded decoration surmounted by an ormolu wreath and standing on decorative ormolu feet. Gilded chased bezel with bevelled glass. Enamel dial with floral decoration, Arabic numerals and original gilded hands signed ‘Comptoir General, J.Pratt, Paris, 9 Bd Poissonnies’. French eight day movement with outside countwheel and anchor escapement striking the hours and halves on a silvered bell marked for Samuel Marti. C.1880 The clock was retailed by Le Comptoir General a prestigious decorative and fine art store in France. At this time the Comptoir General was represented by J.Pratt who was located at 9, Boulvard Poissonnies. ‘Samuel Marti & Cie’ were well known French clockmakers working from their premises at Le Pays De Montbeliard Paris from just before 1860. A charming and high quality French early 19th century Empire st. white Carrara marble and Ormolu clock, signed Veibel a Lyon. This stunning clock is raised on Ormolu topie shaped feet supporting a rectangular marble base. The base is decorated with finely chased Ormolu plaques on three sides, in the manner of Clodion, and with delicate beaded frames. Standing on the base are four Ormolu Doric columns leading up to the Carrara marble entablature decorated with Ormolu pegasi and finely chased beaded trim bands. From the entablature hangs the enameled clock face and mechanism, adorned with a delicate Ormolu frame and richly chased hanging drapery featuring a foliate movements, mythical creatures, and a lovely female mask atop the wonderful sunburst pendulum. All original gilt throughout. Veibel a Lyon, also known as "Weibel", was an 18th century master clock maker based in Lyon, France.
