Gilt Bronze and Silver Elephant Clock, English, circa 1880
About the Item
A beautiful English hard stone gilt bronze and silvered mantel clock, late 19th century, attributed to Howell James, the design by E Finley, circa 1871. Possibly made for the Turkish market.
The clock surmounted by a minaret with moon crescent centered by a star. The oval case decorated with ruby coloured and agate hard stones and centered by a circular enameled white dial with moon hands and Roman numerals, flanked to each side by a large silvered elephant head attached to the case by chains, and skirted by a decorative engraved and fluted panel, on a stepped rectangular base, on four bun feet.
Condition: This rare and unusual clock has been subject to a complete overhaul by our qualified Horologist including cleaning the case and dismantling and cleaning the movement. The original gilding to the case and the enamel to the dial are in excellent condition. The clock is therefore in overall superior condition.

French, circa 1880. Stamped to the movement ‘LEROY & FILS A PARIS, 823’. This fine gilt-bronze and champlevé enamel clock has an arched case with outset bulbous columns to the angles, it is surmounted by a drum top with a pierced scroll and ball finial and applied with expressive cherub mounts. The front and sides of the clock are all exceptionally finely painted with neoclassical scenes of figures in an architectural setting and the top and base enriched with fine polychrome champlevé enamel. The clock has an enamelled chapter ring with Roman numerals interspersed with anthemion devices and a twin barrelled, eight-day movement striking on a bell.
