Japy Freres Louis XVI Neoclassical Gilt Bronze Antique French Clock

About the Item

A large and heavy original antique French gilt-bronze clock, circa 1890. It is a beautifully made clock in the Neoclassical style of Louis XVI by G. Philippe, of the prestigious Gallery Montpensier of the Palais Royal. Of architectural form with two scrolling supports with laurel leaves and Egyptian Esque masks to each side. To the top is an ornate handled urn draped with a laurel garland and mounted with a portrait of a classical figure. The dial is also gilt bronze and is mounted with 12 individual enamel cartouches for the hours and an engraved ring for the minutes. It is complete with its original blued steel hands. The rear door is also glazed to allow the movement to be seen. The French movement is of high quality and is by Japy Frères. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is a replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. We have a video of the clock, please ask and we will send you a link. Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with hardly any wear or discolouration. The dial is also in excellent condition just some tiny nibbles next to the winding holes. There are some light scratches to the original glass. G. Philippe is listed in Tardy, Dictionnaire Des Horlogers at the Gallery Montpensier, Palais Royal, Paris in 1870. Japy Freres mark on the movement backplate along with the retailer's mark of G.
