LIMOUSIN French Art Deco Mantel Clock Set, 1920

About the Item

This French Art Deco mantel clock set, designed by Georges Limousin in the 1920s, features a striking combination of materials including spelter, marble, bronze, brass, and glass. Influenced by the Süe & Mare style, the set is marked by its superb patina, showcasing the craftsmanship of Georges Limousin. The clock and accompanying urns are signed “G. Limousin” twice on the base, affirming their authenticity. The clock itself stands at 13.2 inches (33.5 cm) in height, with a width of 11.2 inches (28.5 cm) and a depth of 4.4 inches (18 cm). Each urn measures 10 inches (25.5 cm) in height and 4.4 inches (11.2 cm) in diameter. The clock retains its original Parisian movement, which has recently been cleaned and is in working order. It comes with its original key and pendulum. Georges Limousin (1898–1981) was a French sculptor known for his contributions to the Art Deco movement. Born in 1898 in Paris, he studied at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts, where he honed his skills in sculpture and developed a distinctive style that blended traditional techniques with modern aesthetics. Limousin's works were primarily produced during the 1920s and 1930s, a period when the Art Deco style was at its peak. He specialized in creating dynamic sculptures that often featured animals, particularly mythical creatures like griffins, which became a recurring motif in his work. Georges Limousin’s work remains an interesting part of 20th-century French sculpture, with his pieces being found in private collections and museums worldwide. He passed away in 1981, but his legacy as a key figure in the Art Deco movement endures.
