About the Item

Rosewood veneered and gilt bronze, spring driven, time, strike and alarm, Louis XV Neuchateloise-style, Cartel mantel clock, made in Italy for the Doria family of Genoa, circa third quarter of the 18th century Case: 86cm x 37cm, rosewood veneered Cartel mantel clock case in the general form of a mid-18th century Neufchatel mantel clock, first developed in Switzerland prior to 1740. This is a waisted and shaped clock case surmounted by a gilt bronze figure of a pensive, winged Father Time with his scythe, winged hourglass below and Father Time leaning on golden shield bearing the family crest of the Doria family of Genoa. The finial rests on an inverted bell-shaped, veneered wooden pedestal just above the shield shaped dial door. This glazed door has fluted molding around the periphery. The glass reveals the dial in the upper section with a fire gilt bronze, fenestrated mask below designed with a plethora of foliate and scrolling shapes while the brass pendulum bob swings below it. There are flared rosewood case extensions adorned with Dore bronze animal paw feet, at all four corners. The back of the case shows that the pedestal of the finial is dovetailed into the case and that there are apertures to see the two bells and a door for access to the movement. Dial: White enameled dial with black Roman hours, closed minute ring with Arabic markers placed every five minutes at the periphery. There are gilt skeletonized Chippendale type hands, two winding apertures for time and striking and a small aperture at the 53 minute mark for winding the alarm which is set from the Arabic numbered, small brass disc at the dial center. Dial is unsigned. Movement: a solid rectangular brass plate movement with two large springs for time and striking and the presence of two large bells above the movement. Brass plates connected by four turned and knopped brass pillars which are pinned at the back plate. There are two bells placed above the movement and two hammers extend from the movement. A short pendulum rod and miniaturized bob is seen swinging at the rear of the back plate. There is a verge escapement and this movement uses the six hour system which was common at that time in Italy. It has Grande Sonnerie striking on two bells for the quarters and strikes the hours individually. The clock strikes from one to six as normal but at 7o'clock the sequence starts again at one and carries on until 12 o'clock where it strikes 6 times. The alarm facility is complete and is wound from the 53 minute marker in the hour chapter ring, and by using the setting disc in the dial center. A metal and string pull device is in the bottom of the case and indicate that the movement can repeat the hours on request.
