Louis XVI Clock in Gilt Bronze and Marble "Philibert à Paris" 18th century

About the Item

Exceptional late 18th-century Louis XVI period mantel clock, modeled by court bronze worker Brécourt in collaboration with Parisian watchmaker Antoine-Marie Philibert. The first model of this clock was ordered by King Louis XVI from the Parisian bronzesmith Brécourt, who had already made numerous commands for him: the clock was delivered to the king in 1775 and was intended to adorn his private cabinet; it was made of blue Sévres porcelain and gilded bronze as an ovoid bowl from which jets of water spouted, equipped with dolphin-shaped handles, reminiscent in its shape of the fountains in the palace of Versailles. The watch was a great success among court-goers so other models were requested, but made of a different material than the one used for the king. It was therefore decided on a white marble bowl with gilt bronze decorations, resting on a white marble base, Exceptionally well-made and exquisitely chiseled, the clock was completed by the mechanics, made in this case by the Parisian watchmaker Antoine-Marie Philibert, who had a workshop at 50, place du Pont Saint Michel and who had married, in 1798, the daughter of the most important Parisian watchmaker at the time, Cronier. The watch is in excellent condition-every piece is original, including the mechanism, balance wheel, winding key, and regulating key. The mercury gilding is authentic and excellently preserved. Accompanying the clock is a handwritten document, belonging to the family of origin, where periodic revisions of the mechanism were noted. Comparable specimens include those kept at the Château de la Fasanerie in the city of Fulda, Germany, and at the Château de Fontainebleau. +IMPORTANT NOTE+ One must be very careful not to confuse this model with apparently identical models produced as copies in the second half of the nineteenth century.
