Louis XVI Style Marble and Gilded Bronze Sun King Pendulum

About the Item

An antique Louis XVI style clock in white marble and gilded bronze. The clock rests on four small beaded bronze feet There are four smooth cylindrical columns in white marble, embellished with gilded bronze beaded capitals that support demi-lune marble top-and bases, the base decorated with garlands of flowers and ribbons and a dove in flight, in shaped gilded bronze and the top with four gilded Louis XVI pinecones. The dial is signed “Metrat, Bel Abbes” and is surrounded by delicate ribbon and foliage. The pendulum is in a radiant sun -shaped, accompanied by a mask, “The Sun King”. Above the dial, sits a lovely perched bird in beautifully refined gilt bronze, a delight. Louis XVI gave himself the nickname of the "Sun King" because he believed he was like the sun to France. He believed he was chosen by God to rule and that everything revolved around him. He made the sun his royal symbol. During his reign, Louis XIV worked to expand France's territory.

Repaired: Clock mechanism has been thoroughly cleaned and oiled by a certified clock master. All of the bronze has been cleaned to reveal the original gilded finish. The marble has been thoroughly cleaned. Wear consistent with age and use. In good antique condition, the clock works beautifully and keeps good time.
