About the Item

This monumental 19th-century French mantel clock, crafted in the lavish Louis XIV style, is a commanding expression of regal elegance and technical refinement. Towering in presence, it is constructed from richly gilded bronze and finely cut glass, showcasing the splendor and precision of French decorative artistry at its height. The clock's architectural silhouette—balanced and symmetrical—is enhanced by a combination of classical ornamentation and expertly faceted glass panels that allow a full view of the intricate inner workings. The case is anchored by a robust bronze base adorned with foliate motifs, above which rise four clear beveled glass panels that provide full transparency on all sides, turning the mechanism into a visual focal point. At the center, the white enamel dial is framed by a finely cast beaded bezel and features Roman numerals with pierced gilt hands. It bears the signature “Ridel à Paris,” affirming its origin from a respected Parisian maker. Beneath the dial, a garland of laurel and roses is suspended in high relief, meticulously detailed and tied with a central ribbon. Above the dial, a finely cast classical bow motif presides, echoed and magnified by the grand urn that crowns the piece. This urn—flanked by twin handles and topped with a pinecone finial—is draped in a sweeping laurel swag that cascades over the upper corners of the frame. The sculptural quality of the ormolu is remarkable throughout, with crisp detailing and a warm, luminous gilded surface that captures the light with every angle. The rear of the clock opens to reveal the original movement and a brilliant gilt pendulum formed as a radiant sunburst centered with a classical mask—an emblem of Apollo, a fitting tribute in a design language so closely tied to the legacy of the Sun King. The mechanism is complete, with a bell strike and spring-driven movement, all housed securely within the protective glass case. In superb condition, the clock retains its original gilt finish, which remains vibrant and consistent across the bronze surfaces. The glass panels are intact and free of cracks, and the movement appears clean and undisturbed, though a routine professional servicing is recommended for optimal timekeeping. A true tour de force of 19th-century French horology, this clock is far more than a timepiece—it is a sculptural monument to classical grandeur. Its harmonious proportions, masterful casting, and visual transparency render it both a marvel of design and a celebration of historical craftsmanship, ideal for the most refined interiors or serious collectors of French decorative arts.
