Neoclassical style antique lapis lazuli, jasperware and gilt bronze clock
This beautiful, Neoclassical style clock was designed in the late 18th Century in France, during the reign of Louis XVI. The piece is crafted from gilt bronze, jasperware, and a lapis lazuli — the latter being a veneer which was recently added. The clock is topped by a lapis lidded tazza. This is decorated with gilt bronze beading and a floral finial, and fitted with two curling handles, and a waisted stem on a circular foot. The vase stands on a rectangular lapis plinth, placed on top of the cylindrical gilt bronze clock case. At the centre of the gilt bronze case is a circular, white enamel dial. This features gilt bronze clock hands, Roman Numerals, and the manufacturer’s name, ‘Carcel Jne A Paris’. Two crossed, gilt bronze laurel branches, with a circular jasperware plaque at their centre, frame the clock case below. The plaque depicts a female warrior — possibly Minerva/Athena (the classical goddess of war) — holding a spear and helmet, with a shield placed nearby on the ground. The figure is pictured as an all-white profile, set against a ‘Wedgewood Blue’ background. The pale blue colour is called this, since it was Josiah Wedgwood, the famous English potter, who first produced this type of pottery in the 1770s. The clock pendulum hangs from the clock case, terminating in a flower form which is mounted with a silvered palmette design. The cylindrical clock case is flanked by a pair of gilt bronze pinecone finials, which are, in turn, flanked by circular gilt-bronze-framed jasperware plaques. These depict cherubs, playing with foliage swags and firing arrows from bows. As with the lower front plaque, the cupids are portrayed as white profiles, offset against ‘Wedgewood Blue’ grounds. The gilt bronze frames they are placed in are topped by flaming torches, draped with flower garlands, and they are set on stems, with circular feet. These items (the pinecone finials and jasperware plaques) are set on a stepped lapis entablature, which is carried by four lapis supports, arranged in a line. The outermost supports are four-sided, have tapered bases, and are mounted with gilt bronze motifs, depicting armour and weaponry. By comparison, the inner supports are shaped like Doric columns, with gilt bronze capitals, draped with foliage swags, and simple gilt bronze bases. The four supports stand on a rectangular stepped lapis plinth. This is decorated with three bands of gilt bronze ornament, first a foliate cornice, then an entwined leafy belt, with a central single leaf mount, and lastly, beading. The lapis plinth is set on four gilt bronze toupie feet.
