Raingo Freres Three-Piece Bronze Cherub Clock Set

About the Item

This graceful, joyous antique clock set is a reminder of why the 19th century Parisian clockmaking firm Raingo Freres is so highly revered: the beautiful bronze casting on the central clock depicts three cherubs standing on one foot each on a scrolling tripod base, holding aloft a gilt bronze clock case. The case is itself modelled as an urn with a bouquet of flowers on top, and the shaped dial is set in the middle of the case. The pair of flanking candelabra also each depict a cherub standing on a scrolling ormolu base, holding aloft five lights emerging from a floral display. The clock dial is signed 'Raingo a Paris' and the dimensions for the individual pieces are as follows: Measures: Clock height 61 cm, width 23 cm, depth 21 cm Candelabra height 66 cm, width 23 cm, depth 27 cm.

This garniture comprises three pieces: a mantel clock and two flanking candelabra, the entire ensemble designed and ornamented in an ornate neoclassical style. The garniture is composed of gilt bronze and lapis lazuli, with the lapis elements being a later addition. The mantel clock, which is supported by a lapis trefoil form base set on its sides with gilt bronze pierced foliate mounts, the gilt bronze contrasting beautifully with the lapis lazuli, contains a figural group of the three graces, sculpted from bronze and exquisitely gilded. The trio holds above their heads the spherical clock...

Antique 19th Century Raingo Frères Ormolu Bronze Cartel Wall Clock with Cherub
By Raingo Frères
Located in Madrid, ES
Exhibiting the fine design and craftsmanship of French clockmakers Raingo Frères (Raingo Brothers), this impressively large clock, measuring over 1 meter tall ( 3 feet +), is an example of the “Second Rococo” period beginning circa 1830, when the highly ornate "Cartel" style of the early 18th century came back into fashion. The clock is crowned at top center by the figure of a putto or cherub, holding in one hand a dove and the other a garland of flowers. This allegorical figure can represent innocence or purity, and was a popular subject for sculptors of the 19th century. The term "Cartel clock" comes from the French "Pendule à Cartel" meaning roughly "clock in a frame for the wall" - the word "Cartel" meaning in this context "decorative frame". These clocks were almost always made from gilt bronze (also known as "ormolu") and highly decorated. The clock is complete and includes a winding key, and will be checked by our specialist clockmaker to ensure it is functioning properly before shipping. Established in the early 1800s, Raingo Frères was one of the leading makers of precision clocks...
