A Rare 18th C. French Dore Bronze Clock w/ Putti & Musician, Att. Robert Osmond

About the Item

A Magnificent and Rare French 18th-Century Doré Bronze Mantel Clock Attributed to Robert Osmond. The clock is designed in the form of an urn, supported by a central pedestal and a rectangular base. The body is cylindrical with a fluted surface, featuring a circular clock dial at the center. The dial has an engraved gilt bronze face with white enamel cartouches displaying Roman numerals, framed by a beaded and foliate border. Two large scrolled handles extend from the upper section, symmetrically placed on either side. The urn is topped with a removable figure of a cherub seated on a draped surface, holding a lyre. The pedestal section is shaped with a leaf-molded lower edge and rests on a rectangular platform adorned with ribbon-tied laurel swags. Two seated putti figures flank the pedestal, each with detailed facial features and drapery folds. The rectangular base features applied decorative elements, including rosettes, bead-and-reel moldings, and corner mounts with floral motifs. The clock rests on four small toupie feet integrated into the base structure. This clock is attributed to Jean-Baptiste Osmond, a French bronzier active in Paris during the second half of the 18th century. He specialized in producing gilt bronze clock cases in neoclassical and rococo styles, supplying cases to leading clockmakers of the period. His workshop’s designs were documented in contemporary trade catalogs, and examples of his signed works are held in museum and private collections. France, Circa: 1750
