Rare Late-19th century English Chess Trophy Bracket Clock.

About the Item

Case: The mahogany architectural case has decorative gilt-bronze mounts and engraved sterling silver plaques denoting the winners of the Sussex Chess Association tournaments between 1893-1921. Dial: The multi-piece dial has silver chapter rings, and matted center, cast spandrels and steel-cut hands. Movement: The eight-day three-train fusee musical movement has 8-bells and 4 gongs and bears the numbers ‘432’. Notes: The clock was used as a trophy for the Sussex Chess Association. It was presented to the winner each year until 1921 when it was given to Mr. Stephenson after he won it 3 years in a row. It stayed in the family until it was given back to the club and was known to be there until 1966. At one point it came to the US where it was eventually restored by John McLemore who was the subject of the podcast S-Town and it is included in the book celebrating his work. Ref: ‘S-Town Exquisite Clocks’, pgs. 108-109. Size: Height – 26.5 in.
